On March 26, the alternative music band, Gorillaz, celebrated 20 years since the release of their first album in 2001.
And to celebrate the special date, the band announced several projects, including the launch of a Non-Fungible Token (NFT).
The launch of NFT and other projects such as vinyl figures, a new collection of band clothing under the G Foot brand, and the reissue of some of their albums, was announced through the music weekly NME (New Musical Express).
However, the news about the NFT generated criticism among its fans due to the environmental impact generated by these digital items.
Environmental impact and NFTs?
While the other projects did not raise comments, the announcement of the band’s creation of an NFT in conjunction with toy company Superplastic, which launched its first NFT in February, generated negative comments from fans.
Critics cited the environmental impact that NFTs have in terms of electricity consumption and carbon footprints.
In addition, they highlighted the “irony” of the launch. After all, in 2010, Gorillaz released the album Plastic Beach in which he talked about environmental awareness, excessive consumption and waste.
Fans are calling the band a hypocrite as they try to stop the NFT release. One of the fans, Jamie Bradner, has launched a petition on change.org (the worldwide petition platform) for the launch to be canceled.
One more for the hype
With the NFTs fever in early March, many artists released their own NFTs with albums or new material.
Among them are the rock band King of Leon and DJ 3LAU. So far, they have had no problems with their fans, or at least not on the scale that Gorillaz is having.
In fact, in both cases, the tokens were well received.
So far, neither Gorillaz, nor his creative or administrative team has made statements about criticism of the NFT. They also did not give a date for launching the product.
