Recently, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, announced that he is in favor of the development of the metaverse and that the government should provide subsidies for developers and programmers to work on the technology’s potential.
But Putin is not alone in his plans to include the state in the metaverse that intends to be a new digital social organization. Next to it is Barbados, an island located in Central America.
According to a recent announcement from the country, Barbados will be the first in the country to establish an embassy in the metaverse. Furthermore, the nation will be the first in the world to recognize the sovereignty of digital lands.
The embassy’s launch is scheduled for January 2022.
For this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados signed an agreement with the company Decentraland (MANA). At the same time, it works in partnership with companies such as SuperWorld and Somnium Space.
In practice, these companies will collaborate with the Embassy of Barbados to purchase land, create institutional buildings and develop services in the digital world.
In relation to services, the future offer of services such as “electronic visas” and teleportals is foreseen. This way, users will be able to take their avatars from one world to another.
Barbados
Barbados is an island of just 430 square kilometers located in eastern Central America, close to South America.
The region has just over 279,000 inhabitants and has English as its official language. Barbados lives mainly from tourism and the production of sugar for export. The official currency is the Barbadian dollar.
As reported by local authorities, reaching the metaverse does not imply a violation of any international treaty or the Vienna Convention.
In addition, the country said that it requested legal advice in this regard. After all, it is setting an unprecedented precedent in all of history.
“The metaverse is still young and very young. Therefore, we want to make sure that what we build can be transferred between metaverses,” said Gabriel Abed, Barbados ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
